  • Building Friendships

Since the start of this competition, we have never won a match but through this competition we were able to make new friends from other places and have made stronger friendships within our team. It doesn't matter if we win or lose as we all still had fun. I also hope that through this competition pre-believers will come to know God through the sharings.

  • The One Who Will Be There For Me

In the first curriculum of this Crossroad league, we have learnt that everybody would have faced one of the darkest time in their lives, be it failing your studies, or breaking up with your girlfriend. This is a story of my darkest time in my life. It was when my grandpa passed away last November.

  • Passing on the Blessings

Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times. “Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants.

  • God Wants To Heal You

Throughout my time as an athlete, I've seen people getting injuries during the course of their game, mostly ankle sprain in the game of basketball. Personally, I'm very thankful that not even once did I sprain my ankle or suffer any physical injuries to the extent that I had to stop playing. For those who are familiar with the bible will know that there are many instances of miracle healing in the past compared to the present where we rarely see miracle healing.

  • Planning to Win

In preparations for a basketball match, coaches and players would have a plan to compete with opponents based on their strengths and weakness. Teams plan out a game plan to achieve a certain goal which in our case, we practices set pieces, we train on our ball handling, shooting, chemistry and etc. However, in a game, unforeseen circumstances can still happen which causes the plan not to go smoothly.

  • Life Values Through Basketball

I was invited to team Kairos by my history teacher Mr Stanley Tan. Before joining the team, i was playing casual basketball in school almost every single day. However, after the many training sessions i had with team Kairos, i found out that i still had a long way to go before becoming a good basketball player.

  • My First Basketball Game

As this is my first formal basketball game in my 20 years of life, I felt rather nervous. I was also lost on court. I have made mistakes and missed 3 out of 3 shots.

  • Taming The Tongue

James 3:7-9 People can tame all kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and fish, but no one can tame the tongue. It is restless and evil, full of deadly poison. Sometimes it praises our Lord and Father, and sometimes it curses those who have been made in the image of God.

Being the coach of team ASC is a daunting task. Undoubtedly, it is an absolute privilege and honor to coach a team filled with talent and passion. However, having the pressure of coaching this group of individuals to come together as a team is a challenging task. Despite the challenges, it is a blessing that maturity runs in the team.

We were up against YG EAGLES for our second match of the 2014 season. Preparations for the game were complete and the team was confident of winning. With confidence running high after the win in the previous match, we were looking to ride the wave onto this game. However, team ASC faced one of its biggest challenges as a team in this very match. The team was not in sync and we were playing the worst game of the season yet. Well into the 2nd quarter and score read 9 – 5 with team ASC holding onto a 4 point lead.

Confidence was low and I could see in their faces that the team had lost direction of the game. We were unsure in our plays and open shots were given up for fear of missing. Our individual talent got us through the game as we collected ourselves in the 2nd half. However, the team needed encouragement and reminding of why they were called “Team ASC” in the first place.

As we sat down for a debrief, I told them that this match allowed us to realize our inadequacies and weaknesses. It allowed us to reflect upon the game and look at ourselves to see where and what could be improved. This included myself as the team coach, I realized that I had made the team play in a manner that was not their most comfortable form. I made the decision to revert to our old system and forgo our experimentations of other systems and plays. Even as I went thru the game and encouraged the players, it could be seen that they had hit an all time low in morale. Something had to be done.

Through the week after the game, I kept thinking of possible ways to improve team morale. I looked at our team identity and sought to bring that up and remind the team of our own abilities. We were a defensive minded team with offense mainly running off shots and fast breaks. With only a solid defense there was no way we could win if shots weren’t taken and the team was fearful of taking shots. I needed to find a way to make them believe in their shots again.

Maybe it was a sign and maybe it was fate, I stumbled upon an article on Facebook posted by a friend of quotes from Michael Jordan. I saw one which he said,

“I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”
― Michael Jordan

The quote was perfect! It reminded the team of how failure leads to success and at the same time encouraged them to take shots, chances. I posted the quote onto the team whatsapp chat and the response was great. The team encouraged one another and it could be felt that our confidence was back again. Now, the team was looking forward to the next game with confidence once more. Against Kairos for the 3rd game, we played like a team with confidence and with flow that showed the quality of the team. We were back.

In this team, what we coach and teach is not just basketball, we also seek to impart life lessons. Just like basketball, we “don’t stop shooting’. Whether it is for our dreams or for our beliefs, we continue to try and take chances to get us closer to the goal. It is a never ending chase and taking of chances and trying. It is relentless.
